UNIVERSE
INVEST IN THE FUTURE TO CELEBRATE THE PAST

Discover the next chapter of Universe, a multi-layered cultural collaboration between Fondation Vasarely, Paco Rabanne and Selfridges – with proceeds facilitating the restoration of monumental Vasarely artworks and historical Paco Rabanne archives.

UNIVERSE

First unveiled as a first-of-its-kind exhibition-meets-retail space within The Corner Shop at Selfridges London, Universe explores the ground-breaking work of artist Victor Vasarely, his influence on his contemporaries such as Paco Rabanne, and the impression they both left on future tastemakers. Translating their shared visions across every possible touch point – from archive to metaverse and NFTs – Universe merges the past and the future, the physical and the digital.

“As Selfridges looks to the future, exploring the ways we can deepen the conversations between our customers and partners, we continue to find inspiration in the past. In the case of Victor Vasarely and Paco Rabanne, we have more than fifty years of proposals for the future to explore.” Selfridges Executive Buying Merchandising Director Sebastian Manes.

PACO RABANNE AND THE ‘12 UNWEARABLE’ NFTs

For his debut couture collection in 1966, Paco Rabanne presented ‘12 unwearable dresses in contemporary materials’. Now the brand is pushing the concept of ‘unwearable’ further still by creating a collection of NFTs inspired by the most opulent couture creations over the past seven decades.

FONDATION VASARELY’S RESTORATIVE NFT PROJECT

Fondation Vasarely’s foray into NFTs features 12 historic Victor Vasarely artworks – the proceeds of which will go to repairing monumental artworks within the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence, France, a museum designed by the artist himself.

UNIVERSE INSTORE

Visitors to the Universe exhibition in The Corner Shop at Selfridges London saw the storefront transformed, with each of its 24 iconic windows individually wrapped with Vasarely’s designs. The Corner Shop (complete with a hypnotic Vasarely-printed floor) housed 55 original works of art from the ‘Father of Op-Art’ giving customers the unique opportunity to invest in standout artworks.  Archive Paco Rabanne pieces were showcased amongst Julien Dossena’s Spring Summer ‘22 Collection for Paco Rabanne inspired by Victor Vasarely.

UNIVERSE IN DECENTRALAND

Selfridges unveiled its Decentraland version of its Birmingham store, with an immersive Universe journey with Paco Rabanne and Victor Vasarely. An homage to the iconic Bullring building, it arrived in Decentraland on 24 March, offering customers the chance to preview the Universe NFTs from both artists.
